Statement From the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 22, 2009) - The Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter has been negotiating with CUPE 4731, which represents our unionized employees, for the last year. During the current round of negotiations, the Union requested the Provincial Government Director of Mediation Services appoint a Mediator who has been working with the parties to assist in negotiations.

The Mediator, after meeting with the parties, recommended terms for settlement of the current round of bargaining for acceptance or rejection by the Parties. The Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter accepted the mediator's recommendations. The Union rejected the mediators recommended terms of settlement and on April 1, 2009 conducted a strike vote.

The Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter believes its position in collective bargaining has been fair and reasonable and is favorable as compared to other women's shelters in Alberta.

The Mediator has contacted the parties to schedule a further meeting in May. The Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter negotiating committee will be in attendance and will make every reasonable effort to enter into a new collective agreement.

The Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter provides essential services to more than 12,000 Calgarians annually, providing counseling and support to victims of family violence. We continue to operate all services as usual -our Crisis Shelter, 24 hr Family Violence Helpline, community support services, children and youth programs and our men's counseling services. Any Calgarian experiencing family violence should contact the 24 hr Family Violence Helpline: 403-234-7233.
