OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 16, 2012) - The National Committee for UN Women in Canada is an independent NGO. Nominations for the annual award of the Canadian National Committee are made without any consultation with UN Women; it is strictly a local award. One of numerous individuals nominated is Minister Ambrose, in recognition of her efforts to have October 11 dedicated annually as the International Day of the Girl Child. The Day was observed for the first time in 2012 with widespread global participation to highlight the urgent need to afford equal opportunities to girls and protect them from harmful practices, such as early marriage. The Canadian National Committee realizes that by considering an active office holder, other issues on the political agenda have become part of the discussion. The National Committee wishes to underline, however, that no public statement on the proposed recipients have been made.
