Statement by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport) on Josee Grand'Maitre and Waneek Horn-Miller Being Named Canada's Assistant Chefs de Mission...

...for the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 18, 2014) - I would like to offer our Government's most heartfelt congratulations to Josée Grand'Maître and Waneek Horn-Miller, who were today named Canada's Assistant Chefs de Mission for the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games.

Josée Grand'Maître has represented Canada at the international level more than any other racquetball player. She is the only Canadian racquetball player to have participated in four Pan American Games. She was a bronze medallist in doubles at Santo Domingo 2003 and also competed at Mar del Plata 1995, Winnipeg 1999 and Guadalajara 2011.

Waneek Horn-Miller won a gold medal at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg as a member of the national women's water polo team. When women's water polo made its first Olympic appearance at the Sydney 2000 Games, she served as co-captain of the Canadian team that finished fifth. In 2001, she helped Canada win a bronze medal at the FINA World Championships.

The Assistant Chefs de Mission will work with Chef de Mission Curt Harnett to mentor and lead Canadian athletes competing in Toronto.

Our Government recognizes that our athletes are an enormous source of pride and inspiration for all Canadians and serve as excellent role models for our youth. We have maintained record-level funding to the Canadian sport system-including our support for the Canadian Olympic Committee, national sport organizations and Own the Podium-so we can ensure our athletes reach the podium at every possible opportunity.

The Toronto 2015 Pan American Games will take place from July 10 to 26, 2015 and will feature athletes from 41 countries and territories.
