Statement by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), on the Occasion of the Opening Ceremony of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND--(Marketwired - July 24, 2014) - Yesterday marked the official opening of the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Our Canadian team marched proudly into Celtic Park, led by our flag bearer and Shooter athlete, Susan Nattrass, who joined more than 4,500 athletes representing the 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth as our athletes began their journey to the top of the Games podium.

Countless hours go into training to compete at this world-class level, and our athletes are ready to show the rest of the Commonwealth what Canada brings to the field of play.

Our Government is proud to support our inspiring Canadian athletes, investing nearly $200 million a year in Canada's athletes and sport organizations to provide them with the resources and tools they need to compete and win on the international stage.

Along with Canadians across the country, we will be watching, cheering and believing as these men and women compete for our great nation with the maple leaf close to their hearts.
