Statement by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport) on Sultana Frizell Being Named Canada's Flag-Bearer for the Closing Ceremony of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND--(Marketwired - Aug. 3, 2014) -

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, I would like to offer my most heartfelt congratulations to Sultana Frizell, who today was named Canada's flag-bearer for the closing ceremony of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The announcement was made by Commonwealth Games Canada in Glasgow, Scotland.

Sultana Frizell's performance in the hammer throw event, which earned her a gold medal, has inspired Canadians across our country. Demonstrating outstanding talent and drive, Sultana represents true Canadian athleticism and pride, and I look forward to cheering her on as she leads our Canadian Team into Hampden Park for the Closing Ceremony.

It has been an exciting journey for our Canadian Team so far, and I am honoured to have witnessed many of their amazing performances.

Our Government recognizes that our inspiring athletes are an enormous source of pride for all Canadians and serve as excellent role models for our young people.

We have maintained record-level funding for the Canadian sport system, including our support of Commonwealth Games Canada, national sport organizations and Own the Podium, so that we can ensure our athletes reach the podium at every possible opportunity.

I encourage all Canadians to join me in continuing to cheer on our Canadian team at the 20th Commonwealth Games.

Let's go, Canada!
