Statement by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), on the Torch Lighting Ceremony for the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, British Columbia

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 16, 2014) -

The Torch Relay for the Prince George 2015 Canada Winter Games began today with the ceremonial lighting on Parliament Hill. The torch will travel throughout British Columbia in the months leading up to the Games, generating excitement across the province about hosting athletes, coaches and visitors from all the provinces and territories.

Nearly 2,400 Canadian athletes will gather in Prince George for two weeks in February 2015 to compete in 19 sporting events. The Games will hold special significance as the first national multisport event held in 2015, the Year of Sport in Canada.

The Canada Games bring together participants from all across our great country to share the spirit of competition, to demonstrate their excellence in sport, and to proudly trumpet the benefits of sport to Canada's shared values and prosperity. They provide future members of our national teams with valuable training and competition experience and prepare young Canadian athletes for podium success on the international stage.

Our Government is proud to support the hosting of the Prince George 2015 Canada Winter Games. We look forward to seeing the next generation of talented athletes compete in Prince George this winter.
