Statement by the Honourable Bernard Valcourt Regarding the Transfer of Responsibility for Emergency Management Services for Manitoba Flood Evacuees

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 3, 2013) - The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, issued the following statement today:

"Our Government's priority is the health and safety of First Nations people and that's why we are focused on ensuring that Manitoba flood evacuees continue to receive the services and support they need until they can return home.

While the Manitoba Association of Native Firefighters (MANFF) has done important work in the areas of emergency preparedness and response, their capacity to deliver long-term recovery services and support for evacuees is limited. This is something that MANFF has indicated in discussions with my Department.

As a result, I have instructed departmental officials to work with MANFF on a transition plan, in partnership with the affected First Nation communities and the province, which supports this approach. This will also include working with the Canadian Red Cross, who will work with the affected communities to conduct an assessment of their longer term needs as evacuees. The Canadian Red Cross provides disaster relief and recovery efforts in communities across Canada every day, and I want to thank them for taking on this important responsibility.

I have also asked the department to reach out to the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs on this issue."
