Statement by the Honourable Chuck Strahl on the Success of the 2008 Arctic Winter Games

YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES--(Marketwire - March 15, 2008) - The following statement was released by the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Metis and Non-Status Indians, to mark the closing ceremonies of the 2008 Arctic Winter Games.

"I would like to extend my congratulations to the athletes, coaches, organizers and volunteers - all those who contributed to the tremendous success of these games. I would also like to express my appreciation for the wonderful hospitality of the City of Yellowknife.

Echoing the sentiments expressed by the Prime Minister on the occasion of the opening ceremonies last weekend, I agree that all the people involved in making this event a great success are indeed 'the brightest stars in the northern sky' for making every athlete feel like a winner, and every guest feel like they're among friends.

Our Government has invested $450,000 in support of the 2008 edition of the Arctic Winter Games to help raise the profile of the Arctic Winter Games and showcase Yellowknife, the Northwest Territories and Canada's tourism assets. Tourism is one of the priority investment areas identified by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development program. It is a key component of the department's continuing commitment to economic diversification in the Northwest Territories.

This investment in the 2008 Arctic Winter Games reinforces the commitment in the Speech from the Throne and the 2008 Budget to advance an integrated Northern Strategy focused on strengthening Canada's sovereignty, protecting our environmental heritage, promoting economic and social development, and improving and devolving governance."
