On naming the New Bridge for the St. Lawrence

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 4, 2014) - I am aware of the concerns that have been expressed by some in the last few days over the future name of the New Bridge for the St. Lawrence. Many people seem to be making this a contest between Samuel de Champlain and Maurice Richard. Among the numerous comments that I've heard and read in the last several hours, one thing is clear: we all agree that these two important historical figures deserve the greatest of honours.

That some want to debate these two great personalities does not do justice to either one. Both deserve to have their memory commemorated and respected.

Since October 5, 2011, the day that I announced the construction of a New Bridge for the St. Lawrence, we have been aware that questions surrounding the naming of the new bridge would be raised. We have always known that the Champlain Bridge would be demolished, and that it would force a serious reflection on the best way to continue to honour the memory of Champlain.

Our reflection continues. Our intention has always been to ensure that this important figure in our country's history is not forgotten.

Once again, let me remind you that our priority is to build a new bridge for 2018 and to ensure that the current bridge remains safe.
