Statement by the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), Congratulating Marcel Aubut as President-elect of the Canadian Olympic Committee

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 30, 2009) -

Congratulations to Marcel Aubut on being chosen president-elect of the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC).

Mr. Aubut brings a wealth of experience to the COC, and as the Committee's first francophone president, he reflects an important part of Canada's rich sport heritage. I look forward to working with Mr. Aubut and wish him success in his new position.

With less than a year to go, Canadians are excited to welcome the world to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Our athletes are having an outstanding year showing the world their skill and talent. So far, they have won 244 medals in the 2008-09 winter season.

Our Government is committed to working with the COC to ensure that our Canadian athletes have the tools and resources they need to succeed in 2010 and beyond.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, I want to congratulate the COC on providing effective leadership to Canadian high-performance sport. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Mike Chambers, who has made such a significant contribution to the COC as the current president and will see the COC through to the end of the 2010 Winter Games. His leadership and dedication to sport development is truly inspiring.

Our Government looks forward to continued collaboration with the COC and all of our partners to ensure that the 2010 Winter Games are truly Canada's Games.
