Statement by the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), on the Occasion of the Opening of the Games of La Francophonie

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 27, 2009) - The VI Games of La Francophonie began today in Beirut, Lebanon. This huge event for Francophone youth, which has the special feature of combining cultural and sport competitions, allows our young athletes and artists to enjoy highly enriching experiences in the company of their peers from throughout the international Francophonie.

Canada is very well represented at the Games by a strong team whose members show the diversity of our vast country. In the coming days, Team Canada will take part in most of the cultural and sport categories included in the program and will once again have the opportunity to showcase Canada's excellence to the rest of the world.

Since the Games of La Francophonie were established, they have helped young people be enriched by an extraordinary experience and have contributed to the development of artists and athletes who are now well known both in Canada and abroad.

As Minister of State (Sport) and on behalf of the people of Canada, I would like to wish the best of luck to everyone taking part in the VI Games of La Francophonie. These young people are a great source of inspiration and pride for us, and we are all behind them.
