Statement by the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), on the Occasion of Sports Day in Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 15, 2010) - Sport is a defining part of our identity as Canadians. Our Government understands the important role that sport plays in enriching our daily lives and in helping create strong and healthy communities.

It is my pleasure to support Sports Day in Canada on September 18. Sports Day lets us celebrate sport—from a grassroots level to the highest ranks of elite performance—in communities across the country. It allows us to show our pride in our Canadian athletes and to promote the importance of active lifestyles. There are many simple ways for Canadians of all ages to be active and healthy, and our Government is taking action to encourage Canadians to live healthy lives by supporting important programs like ParticipACTION.

The Government of Canada is proud to be the single largest contributor to sport in this country and to support participation and excellence from playground to podium. The 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver created unparalleled excitement and pride in this country's athletes and our sports programs. As Minister of State (Sport), I encourage everyone to keep those feelings alive and to take part in Sports Day activities in your community.
