Statement by the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), on the Official Announcement of The New Funding Model for the Olympic Oval

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 9, 2010) - For more than two decades—since Calgary welcomed the world to the 1988 Olympic Winter Games—the Olympic Oval has provided Canadian athletes with a top-notch venue in which to train and perform. It is creating a culture of excellence and offering unparalleled opportunities for generations of Canadian athletes to prepare to compete internationally and to continue to make Canada a leading sport nation.

Our Government is proud to have worked with WinSport Canada, the University of Calgary, and Speed Skating Canada to find solutions that have resulted in a new funding model for the Olympic Oval.

Our Government recognizes the significant effort and success of our speed skaters and our coaches. We will continue to work to ensure they have the support they need to train as they prepare for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to commend everyone involved in this initiative. Together, we're helping to promote a vital part of Canada's sport system.
