Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 13, 2009) - Canadian poets play an important role in our society, enriching our lives with creative works that reflect who we are, and using the power of language to explore the world at large and our place in it.

In awarding the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award each year, the League of Canadian Poets pays tribute to a small, but vital, group of people: Canadian artists who have published a first book of poetry in the preceding year. This award will encourage talented wordsmiths to continue writing and publishing, and ultimately contributing to the strength of our literary heritage.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, congratulations to the nominees and winner of this year's Gerald Lampert Memorial Award. As well, let me commend everyone involved with the League of Canadian Poets on their efforts to showcase the artistry of emerging Canadian poets.
