Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the Canadian Folk Music Awards

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 22, 2009) - In communities large and small throughout this country, Canadian musicians are continually showing that our folk music scene is as rich and diverse as Canada itself. Our Government recognizes how important these artists are to our cultural heritage and to our economy. That is why we support events that promote the arts and give Canadian artists the opportunity to express their creativity and to bring significant benefits to the local community and economy.

By presenting awards in 19 different categories, the Canadian Folk Music Awards pay tribute to and foster a musical genre that has played a significant role in telling our stories, helping shape our identity, and nurturing generations of Canadians.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I am pleased to congratulate the nominees and winners of the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards and to commend everyone involved in ensuring the success of this year's awards show.
