Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the Western Canadian Music Awards

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 24, 2010) - Music is one of the cornerstones of Canadian culture, and the music industry is a cherished part of the Canadian economy. In communities large and small throughout this country, Canadian musicians are continually showing that our music scene is as rich and diverse as Canada itself.

Now in its 8th year, the Western Canadian Music Awards continue to celebrate excellence in Western Canada's music industry. This event allows people across the country—and around the world—to discover the region's talented artists and distinct musical culture. At this year's event in Kelowna, British Columbia, members of the music industry from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and the North were recognized for their achievements in more than 30 categories.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to all of this year's award winners and nominees. We are proud to support, through the Canada Music Fund, the Western Canadian Music Alliance's efforts to recognize and promote excellence in Canadian music through this event.
