Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the 18th Annual Saskatchewan Book Awards Gala

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 27, 2010) -

Books occupy a very special place in Canadian homes. Year after year, authors use their creative talents to write the stories that inspire and entertain us. With their storytelling gifts, writers are able to arouse a host of different emotions in readers, as they share their experiences and knowledge. Canada is proud to have so many authors whose works contribute so much to the cultural development of our country.

Our Government knows how important the arts and culture are to the vitality of our society and the enhancement of our identity. That is why we offer programs that support and promote the Canadian publishing sector. One such program, the Canada Book Fund, seeks to ensure access to a large and diverse body of works by Canadian authors.

The 18th Annual Saskatchewan Book Awards Gala gives us an opportunity both to celebrate our literature by showcasing local books and to reward the province's writers and publishers for their excellent achievements.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate all of this year's finalists and winners on their invaluable contributions to the development of Canadian literature.
