Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the 2009 East Coast Music Awards

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 1, 2009) - For more than 20 years, the East Coast Music Awards have celebrated excellence in Atlantic Canada's music industry. This celebration also allows Canadians across the country to discover the East Coast's talented artists and the region's own musical culture.

Today, at the end of a four-day festival-conference, the 2009 East Coast Music Awards ceremony took place in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. The awards paid tribute to some of the most outstanding singers, songwriters, and musicians in Atlantic Canada, as well as leaders of the East Coast music industry, including broadcasters, photographers, and technicians.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I offer my sincere congratulations to all of this year's winners. I also wish to acknowledge all the nominees and thank the East Coast Music Association for contributing to the success of this major cultural gathering.

Our Government is proud to support the East Coast Music Awards, which make such a significant contribution to the vitality of Atlantic Canada's cultural scene.
