Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Passing of Kananginak Pootoogook

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 26, 2010) - It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Canadian artist Kananginak Pootoogook.

A Nunavut artist, Mr. Pootoogook helped found Cape Dorset's renowned Inuit print studio as well as the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative. Working with a variety of media, including lithography, etching, and stone sculpture, he meticulously documented the Inuit way of life. He was awarded a 2010 National Aboriginal Achievement Award for his dedication to the preservation and expression of his culture through visual arts.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I extend my sincere condolences to Mr. Pootoogook's family and friends.
