Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Presentation of the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 22, 2011) - Artists master an art, a skill, or a technique that allows them to express their creativity through original works that inspire and amaze us. Canada is blessed with an abundance of talented people whose creative work helps enrich our cultural life.

The 2011 celebration for the Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts is an opportunity to honour the Canadian artists who have distinguished themselves through the outstanding quality of their works. Thanks to the passion that drives them and their unique vision, this year's nominees have allowed us to discover a fascinating universe. These creators make a wonderful contribution to Canada's artistic landscape, while helping promote the visibility and development of our culture.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate all of this year's award recipients. I would also like to thank the Canada Council for the Arts and the Governor General of Canada, whose collaboration has made it possible to bestow these awards on our eminent artists.
