Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages,on the Occasion of the Presentation of the Pierre Berton Award

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Markewtire - Nov. 19, 2010) – Historians have much to teach us about our country and about ourselves. Those who can instruct us in an engaging way are especially deserving of recognition.

Established in 1994, the Pierre Berton Award celebrates those who have helped popularize Canadian history with the written word through such means as publications, film, radio, television, theatre, or the Web.

Our Government is committed to helping Canadians gain a better understanding of our country and its institutions, and we commend Canada's History Society on its recognition and encouragement of those who bring Canadian history alive for a wider audience. Knowledge of our past helps us learn who we are, what brings us together, and how we can shape a strong future.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate the winner of the 2010 Pierre Berton Award, Desmond Morton, on his excellent publications and continuing efforts to make Canadian history accessible and compelling to the national and international public.
