Statement by the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Toronto International Film Festival

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 14, 2014) - Again this year, I was impressed by the quality and the diversity of the films presented at the Toronto International Film Festival. I was also very proud to see that Canadian filmmakers and artists have once again distinguished themselves through their extraordinary talent and creativity.

TIFF is one of the most important international film festivals in the world. The Festival screens more than 300 films from more than 60 countries every year.

Our Government recognizes the important role that the film industry plays in the cultural and economic growth of our country. In 2012-2013, film and television production in Canada generated $5.8 billion in economic activity and nearly 128,000 jobs. Every year, our Government invests more than $600 million in our audiovisual sector through Telefilm Canada, the National Film Board of Canada, the Canada Media Fund and tax credits.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I commend the work of the Toronto International Film Festival, which plays a vital role in putting Canada and Canadian films on the world stage. I also want to congratulate the talented nominees and award winners who were honoured at this year's TIFF.
