Statement by the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the 2014 Scotiabank Giller Prize

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 11, 2014) - Last night, the 2014 Scotiabank Giller Prize recognized outstanding dedication and artistry in Canada's book industry as the coveted prize was presented to a gifted writer.

The Scotiabank Giller Prize is one of Canada's most esteemed literary awards, presented every year to the author of the best Canadian novel or short story collection published in English. I am pleased that Sean Michaels has been awarded the 2014 Scotiabank Giller Prize for his book Us Conductors.

Our Government is proud to support the book industry, an important part of our identity and economy. Book publishers in Canada generate over $2 billion in revenue every year and directly employ around 9,000 people. Through the $39.1-million Canada Book Fund, the Department of Canadian Heritage supports approximately 300 book publishers and industry organizations annually in more than 80 cities.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Sean Michaels. I would also like to applaud all the nominated writers for producing great Canadian literature for the world to enjoy.
