Statement by the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, on the 150th Anniversary of the Voltigeurs de Quebec

QUÉBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 6, 2012) - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today issued the following statement:

"March 7, 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of the Voltigeurs de Québec, our oldest French-Canadian regiment. For 150 years, this regiment has been a part of our history and it continues to make its mark through its local presence, the professionalism with which it accomplishes its missions and its indispensable commitment to the defence of Canadian values.

Through all eras, in the various conflicts which confronted the new Canadian Confederation, during the two world wars and the recent conflicts in which they fought along the UN and NATO, the regiment's troops pursued a long tradition of courage and tenacity. Within the last decades, the Voltigeurs' participation in missions such as Egypt, Cyprus, the former Yugoslavia, Golan, Haiti, the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan brought much pride and demonstrated the great value of the Canadian army.

The 150th anniversary of the Voltigeurs reminds us of the importance of remembering the sacrifices and contributions made by our men and women in uniform who continue to defend Canadian values. Today we express our gratitude to the Voltigeurs for their service to our country and their contributions to our collective and military heritage."
