Statement: Industry Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 9, 2013) - On the occasion of the passing of world-renowned Canadian researcher Dr. Tony Pawson, the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Industry, made the following statement:

"I am saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Tony Pawson. The Canadian scientific community and researchers around the world have lost a talented and pioneering colleague.

"Dr. Pawson led a cell biology team at Mount Sinai Hospital's Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute in Toronto. His study of intracellular transduction, the way the cells in our bodies communicate with each other, is considered to have fundamentally changed cancer research, saving many lives through work that some observers have called revolutionary.

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to extend condolences to Dr. Pawson's family. I salute him and his work, and, in his memory, I encourage Canadian researchers in their own endeavours."
