Statement by Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages Shelly Glover About World Acadian Congress 2014

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 8, 2014) - Canadians across the country are invited to celebrate the rich Acadian culture by taking part in the 5th World Acadian Congress, which starts today and continues through August 24, 2014.

This year, the World Acadian Congress is taking place in "Acadia of the Lands and Forests," which covers the Madawaska region in New Brunswick, Quebec's Témiscouata region and northern Maine in the United States.

Acadians from around the globe are invited to meet at the event, held under the theme "Acadia of the World," to celebrate the Acadian identity and pride. As Minister of Canadia Heritage and Official Languages, I encourage Canadians of all ages, and especially our youth, to make the most of this unique opportunity to discover and appreciate Canada's rich history.

The Acadian people have been contributing to our country's economic, cultural and social vitality for more than 400 years. Today, Acadians live in almost every province and territory across Canada. The Acadian diaspora is proud of its heritage, and an event like the Congress showcases this community's vitality and diversity.

Through such initiatives as the Roadmap for Canada's Official Languages 2013-2018, our Government supports minority official-language communities, which ensure that English- and French-Canadian language and culture is alive and well from coast to coast to coast.

Best wishes for a successful Congress to everyone involved in this event.
