Statement by the Minister of National Defence on NATO's Military Committee Conference 2007

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 6, 2007) - The Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, issued the following statement today on NATO's Military Committee Conference:

"Canada is honoured to be hosting this year's NATO Military Committee Conference of the chiefs of defence staff of NATO's 26 nations, in Ottawa and Victoria, from 6 to 9 September. The conference will examine Alliance operations and capabilities from a long-term, strategic perspective.

NATO is a flexible, responsive organization ready to address the threats and security challenges of the 21st century. Through its various missions, NATO plays a key role as a security provider.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan remains the Alliance's priority mission. The cooperation of all NATO nations and our partners is essential for the success of the mission, and the establishment of a strong and democratic government in Afghanistan.

Canada is a key contributor to the NATO mission in Afghanistan and is helping to improve security, promote good governance, enable reconstruction and facilitate development."
