Statement: Minister of Public Safety Issues Statement on the Kanesatake Mohawk Police

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 18, 2006) - The Hon. Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, issued the following statement regarding the Kanesatake Mohawk Police and the draft Financial Audit Report covering the period of April 1, 2003 to March 31, 2005:

"The draft Financial Audit Report covers the years of the former Liberal government. It is not surprising that there are more examples of Liberal mismanagement and Liberal waste of taxpayers' hard-earned money. On January 23rd, Canadians demanded that we restore accountability to government after thirteen years of Liberal misuse. That's what we committed to do.

I have received the draft report and I am reviewing it. I am concerned about a number of financial deficiencies identified in the audit. Any allegation of mismanagement is a matter that our new government takes seriously. Unlike the Liberals, Canada's new government will not tolerate mismanagement of Canadian taxpayers' money. I will be receiving the final report in two weeks and will be coming forward with measures to ensure that any abuses are addressed and that such a situation does not re-occur."
