RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL--(Marketwired - Sept. 7, 2016) -
As Minister for Sport and Persons with Disabilities and a past member of Team Canada, I am honoured to represent the Government of Canada at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Tonight, Team Canada will enter Maracanã Stadium behind our country's flagbearer, David Eng, to kick off what promises to be exciting Paralympic Games.
As a two-time Paralympian, I encourage our athletes to enjoy the experience of competing at the Games and come together to celebrate the values of friendship, fair play and equality.
Building on the momentum from Canada's incredible performance at the Olympic Games, 35 million Canadians across the country will now be supporting Team Canada at the Paralympic Games. I encourage everyone to cheer for our athletes as they represent Canada and go for gold. Knowing they have unwavering support from home will give our athletes a little extra confidence in this pressure-filled environment.
The Government of Canada is proud to support Team Canada through federal programs and policies that promote sport excellence. We make these investments on behalf of Canadians because we know the impact our Paralympians have in encouraging all Canadians - especially our young people and those living with disabilities - to get involved in sport and recreation, and even in inspiring some to chase their own podium dreams. A more active and inclusive Canada is a stronger Canada.
On behalf of all Canadians, I wish much success to all the athletes, coaches and support personnel representing Canada at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
Let's show Team Canada that all of us - #35Mstrong - are united in our support.
