Statement by Minister of State Gosal Congratulating the Canadian Team on Winning Its First Game at the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - June 6, 2015) - I would like to extend heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the Government of Canada to the national women's soccer team on winning its first game today at the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Our national team defeated China on the first day of the tournament. This is an important win for Canada as it strives to obtain the most coveted trophy at the largest women's single-sport tournament in Canadian history. The final will take place on July 5 in Vancouver.

This outstanding performance reminds us that Canada is a leading sport nation, and our Government is proud to support our athletes and help equip them to reach the podium at every possible opportunity. These young soccer players are a true inspiration for all Canadians.

As we celebrate Canada's first win, I'm pleased to see thousands of citizens from across the country support their national team and show their pride in being Canadian. That's what we call true sportsmanship! We are behind our team until the very end.

Best of luck to the team!
