Statement by Minister of State Gosal on the Closing of the Prince George 2015 Canada Winter Games

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - March 2, 2015) - Over the last 18 days, our country's finest young athletes have come together in beautiful Prince George, British Columbia, to showcase their talents in 19 different sports at the Prince George 2015 Canada Winter Games. The Games, Canada's largest domestic multi-sport competition, brought together participants from over 800 communities in every province and territory to share the spirit of competition, as well as to demonstrate their sporting excellence and cultural diversity.

I would like to congratulate, on behalf of the Government of Canada, the athletes and supporters from all the provincial and territorial teams, the Prince George 2015 Canada Winter Games Host Society, the Canada Games Council, the thousands of volunteers and the people of Northern British Columbia for hosting these wonderful Games. Your pursuit of excellence and passion for sport has inspired us all and created memories to last a lifetime.

During this Year of Sport in Canada, I encourage you to bring that passion home with you and foster it through your continued commitment to sport and by contributing in positive ways to your community. We know when we embrace the power of sport and lead more active lifestyles, we not only benefit individually, but we also build healthier, stronger communities.

Our Government is committed to helping Canadians-and especially our children-become and stay more active. That is why we have doubled the Children's Fitness Tax Credit to $1,000. This change, which has already taken effect, will help parents offset the costs of enrolling their children in organized sports. We are a leading sport nation and we want to keep it that way.

We look forward to meeting again in two years at the Winnipeg 2017 Canada Summer Games during the celebrations for Canada's 150th birthday.
