Statement by Ministers Concerning the Rescue of the Crew of Fishing Vessel Monte Galineiro

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 22, 2009) - The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and The Honourable Peter Mackay, Minister of National Defence, today issued the following statement:

"I would like to thank and congratulate the crew of the CCGS Leonard J. Cowley and others who were involved in today's rescue of the crew of the Spanish vessel, the Monte Galineiro. Thanks to the quick response of the Canadian Coast Guard and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, all 22 crew members on board were rescued by the Cowley, which was on patrol when the distress call was received," said Minister Shea.

"Yet again, the coordination of search and rescue activities has produced an excellent outcome. All members of the crew of this ship were rescued because of the hard work and dedication of the Joint Rescue Coordination team and the Canadian Coast Guard," said Minister MacKay.
