Statement of Minister Joly on the Occasion of National Flag of Canada Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Feb. 15, 2016) - February 15 is the day on which Canadians in every corner of the country raise our national flag and reflect on what it represents: a country with a great wealth of history, culture and diversity.

It is a great privilege for me to be part of the team that carries out our humanitarian commitment of welcoming 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada. Understanding the history of our flag and grasping what it embodies is an important milestone for newcomers on their road to citizenship.

Our red and white maple leaf is the emblem of a welcoming country, a new start and unlimited possibilities. It is a symbol that we gladly share with all those who come to join the great Canadian family.

I invite you to take the challenge, "Share your Moment with the Flag!", by taking a picture of yourself with the flag, posting it using the hashtag #Canadaflag, and showing your attachment to your community and your country.
