Statement of Minister Lebel : Latest Results from Statistics Canada-Employment

QUEBEC, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - July 9, 2010) - Today, the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, made the following statement regarding Statistics Canada's newest job report, released today:

"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Canada's Economic Action Plan is creating jobs across Quebec, and today's Statistics Canada report represents more good news for our province.

"According to the report, 93,000 new jobs were created last month. This is the sixth straight month of job gains, following the momentum of the 24,700 new jobs created in May.

"Together, these numbers show our economy is moving in the right direction. In fact, in Quebec, major projects including investments in ports at Sept-Iles and Trois-Rivieres, as well as PRECO; a project that will deliver cleaner and safer water to our province, are presently underway because of Canada's Economic Action Plan. These projects are creating much needed construction jobs in the short term, with long term benefits to the greater community and public.

"However, our economy remains fragile. Still too many Canadians are looking for work. We need to keep helping those who need it. This year's jobs and growth budget implements Year 2 of our Economic Action Plan with a continued focus on helping Quebecois and all Canadians find work, upgrade their skills and advance their careers."
