Statement by Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the 2014 East Coast Music Awards

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 6, 2014) - Atlantic Canada's best and brightest artists were recognized and celebrated this evening at the 2014 East Coast Music Awards.

I am very proud of all the nominees and recipients, and the many industry professionals involved in bringing their amazing talent to light.

Our Government recognizes that the Canadian music industry contributes to the vitality of our cultural life and is an important sector of our economy. The Canadian music industry generates nearly $3 billion annually in economic activity through sound recordings, live performances, commercial radio and performing rights. In the 2014 Budget, our government committed to ongoing funding for Canadian music through the $24.6M Canada Music Fund. Each year on average, the Fund supports the production of more than 400 albums and 1,100 marketing, touring, and music showcase projects.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate the artists whose achievements and dedication were applauded at the 2014 East Coast Music Awards. I also commend the East Coast Music Association and its partners on highlighting Atlantic Canada's vibrant music scene.
