The Staycation is Here to Stay, as Haven Sees 11% Increase in New Visitors to Their British Holiday Parks

HEMEL HEMPSTEAD, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - March 7, 2011) - British holidays are going from strength to strength. That's the view of Haven Holidays as Britain's No 1 family holiday company reports a surge of 11% more new customers booking a Haven break for the first time compared to 2010.

With 35 British holiday parks all in stunning locations and an investment programme that is unrivalled in the industry, Haven believe that the trend is not just about families watching their budgets. A Haven spokesperson said, 'Whilst our self-catering holidays represent excellent value for money, we're seeing a trend amongst new customers in choosing our more luxurious, premium holiday homes. There is a definite shift in attitude towards enjoying some of the most beautiful areas of our own country in preference to overseas travel.'

Industry analysts (KPMG) say that with the decline in holidays abroad, there are signs that a more permanent shift in attitudes is occurring, with almost 50% of the population (and 70% of staycationers) expecting they will take more holidays in the UK, beyond 2010, than they have in the past.

The news comes as a study shows breaks at UK holiday centres are continuing to grow with the industry generating more than £3 billion in tourism spending per year – or 14% of the entire tourism economy. And according to the Office of National Statistics, the growth in self-catering family holidays in the UK rose by 20% according to the latest figures.

"For the moment, it's cool to caravan, with many celebrities endorsing the trend," said one expert.

Other factors encouraging the trend are the perceived green credentials of reduced carbon emissions, anxiety about security issues relating to air travel and the strong Euro making holidays in Europe a much more expensive option.

Haven Holidays offer a firm 'no surcharge' guarantee which, in a market which sees many overseas operators forced to increase their prices, provides an additional benefit for families choosing a UK break.

Easter Holidays with Haven are available from just £179 for a family of up to six sharing Standard self-catering accommodation, including free access to dozens of leisure and sports activities, a full entertainment programme and stunning countryside or seaside locations.
