COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwired - Mar 11, 2014) - With the advent of electronic health records in recent years, big data sets have become commonplace. But harvesting that information to make medicine smarter and safer? That's the sort of creative problem solving that earned Steven Rust, Ph.D. the honor of Battelle's Inventor of the Year.
Rust, a Senior Research Leader, led a team that developed a complex suite of analytical algorithms, software and techniques that work in sophisticated concert to anticipate and mitigate risks for individual patients. The intellectual property portfolio is called Battelle Clinical Predictive Analytics (CPA) and has fueled the recent acquisition of a wholly owned subsidiary called The Healthcare Colloquium. There, Rust will continue to develop the capabilities of the predictive analytics tools and commercialize them while serving as Chief Technology Officer.

The development story began three years ago when researchers at Battelle began applying sophisticated analytical techniques to the vast amounts of data collected by hospitals in an effort to improve patient care. For patients admitted to the hospital, developing acute kidney injury is a risk, though often it is preventable. Rust's team demonstrated the risks that led to kidney failure could be avoided if identified early enough so doctors could intervene.
Now, collaborating with leading health systems, Rust's CPA team has demonstrated ways for hospitals to save millions of dollars each year in addition to identifying opportunities to save patient lives with new approaches in preventative healthcare. The work will continue with The Healthcare Colloquium as it pushes for safer, more effective and affordable medical practices.
The new company also will equip its members with improved access to better healthcare outcomes and costs. Founded by Dr. Tony Joseph, the Colloquium is a hospital membership organization that will enable members to integrate predictive analytics into the day-to-day process of running a hospital system.
