After Wednesday's Bell Market Commentary

On Wednesday, stocks closed mixed. In the opening moments of trade the Dow industrials rose above 12,000 and traded as high as 12,049.51. Light, sweet crude settled down $1.28 at $57.65 a barrel. The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices fell. The Labor Department reported its consumer-price index for September fell a seasonally adjusted 0.5%, driven by a 7.2% drop in energy prices. The Commerce Department said new construction of U.S. homes unexpectedly increased 5.9% in September to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.772 million. The Dow closed up 42.66, or 0.36 percent, at 11,992.68. The Nasdaq composite index fell 7.80, or 0.33 percent, to 2,337.15. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 1.91, or 0.14 percent, at 1,365.96. The Russell 2000 index was down 1.50, or 0.20 percent, at 763.41.
