After Tuesday's Bell Market Commentary

On Tuesday, U.S. stock indexes plunged more than 2 percent. The Conference Board's index of consumer confidence dropped in August to its lowest reading in a year, while a report from S&P/Case-Shiller showed house prices fell 3.2 percent in the second quarter compared with the same period last year. It was their worst decline in 20 years. Bond prices rose. The dollar was lower against other major currencies. Gold prices were slightly lower. Light, sweet crude fell 24 cents to $71.73 a barrel. Stocks fell further as the Fed minutes failed to soothe investors. The Dow fell 280.28, or 2.10 percent, to 13,041.85. The Nasdaq composite index shed 60.61, or 2.37 percent, to 2,500.64. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 34.43, or 2.35 percent, at 1,432.36. The Russell 2000 index was down 21.6, or 2.74 percent, at 767.83.
