After Tuesday's Bell Market Commentary

On Tuesday, the markets closed higher as the Dow Jones industrial average rose more than 110 points even as home prices plunged, consumer confidence dropped and oil prices soared. Prices of existing U.S. single-family homes slumped 8.9 percent in the fourth quarter versus a year earlier, the largest decline in the 20-year history of a national home price index. The U.S. Labor Department reported producer prices jumped a monthly 1 percent in January on rising energy costs and saw an annual 7.4 percent increase. It was the biggest annual leap since 1981. The Conference Board said its index of consumer sentiment fell to 75.0 in February, significantly worse than economists' forecasts. The Conference Board's expectations index fell to 57.9, its lowest in 17 years. Light, sweet crude rose $1.65 to $100.88 a barrel. Bonds rose. Gold prices rose. The dollar was mixed against most other major currencies. The Dow rose 114.70, or 0.91 percent, to close at 12,684.92. The Nasdaq composite index rose 17.51, or 0.75 percent, to close at 2,344.99. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 9.49, or 0.69 percent, to close at 1,381.29. The Russell 2000 index rose 6.86, or 0.97 percent, to close at 717.32.
