After Tuesday's Bell Market Commentary

On Tuesday, stocks closed higher for their second-straight day as investors anticipate another rate cut from the Federal Reserve. The Conference Board reported that confidence fell in January. The index of consumer sentiment fell to 87.9 from an upwardly revised 90.6 in December. The Commerce Department reported orders for big-ticket items rose 5.2 percent in December, the widest jump in five months. The S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index home prices in ten major metropolitan areas fell a record 8.4 percent in the year through November. Bond prices fell. The dollar was mixed against most major currencies. Gold prices fell. Light sweet crude rose 65 cents to $91.64 a barrel. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 96.41, or 0.78 percent, to close at 12,480.30. The Nasdaq composite advanced 8.15, or 0.35 percent, to close at 2,358.06. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 8.34, or 0.62 percent, to close at 1,362.30. The Russell 2000 index rose 2.81, or 0.40 percent, to close at 705.20.
