SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwire - Nov 13, 2012) - Mobile broadband developer Stoke, Inc. announces the immediate availability of its breakthrough wireless offload gateway, the Wi-Fi eXchange, that gives operators unprecedented ability to manage and monetize Wi-Fi connected subscribers. The solution opens the door for operators to offset the escalating costs of capacity increases through revenues from advertising and other premium services. The Wi-Fi eXchange also reduces traffic carrying costs by giving operators granular control over subscriber sessions, enabling them to balance traffic costs with traffic value.
"We know from current engagements that seamless connections and monetization have now become a top priority for operators," said Dan McBride, Vice President of Marketing at Stoke. "Their ultimate vision for Wi-Fi is to deliver the same experience and service over Wi-Fi as they do over the cellular network. Stoke's Wi-Fi eXchange makes this possible today, by providing standards-based solutions to congestion issues, user connectivity problems, and operators' need to control and monetize Wi-Fi traffic. We leverage key principles from market-leading but not yet broadly implemented standards, meaning that operators can execute to their vision now, without waiting for upgrades or replacements to tens of millions of hotspots."
Wi-Fi access points are being deployed on a worldwide scale to solve cellular data network congestion problems, but subscriber connectivity to Wi-Fi is still awkward, demanding multiple steps and effectively removing contact between the user and their service provider.
Control Traffic, Control Costs
Intelligent traffic handling capabilities provided by Stoke's Wi-Fi eXchange provide the traffic insight and steering capabilities required to make Wi-Fi offload commercially viable for operators. For example, Wi-Fi eXchange allows mobile broadband operators to apply policy to route some sessions to the mobile core, while Internet bound sessions bypass core network elements. This granular, dynamic traffic control gives operators a comprehensive view of Wi-Fi-connected user activity, and also guards against mobile core cost escalation while keeping a door open for mobile services over Wi-Fi.
Further, Wi-Fi eXchange borrows from WFA Passpoint and 3GPP standard specifications, supporting a range of connection protocols, along with Extensible Authentication Protocols (EAP) to streamline subscriber access and authentication when connecting over Wi-Fi. Recognizing that Wi-Fi is a technology with a long history, Wi-Fi eXchange is also able to leverage legacy, web portal-based sign-on mechanisms to allow older terminals to access Wi-Fi services, thereby protecting operators' existing investments while also accommodating more current access technologies.
Stoke's Wi-Fi eXchange is now deployed in multiple operator trials worldwide and, to demonstrate its ability to enable end-to-end solutions in existing and new networks, has successfully performed interoperability testing with Wi-Fi equipment vendors including Aruba, Ericsson/Belair, Cisco, Meraki and Ruckus and mobile core element (GGSN) vendors including Ericsson, Cisco, Huawei and Nokia Siemens. Broad interoperability support maximizes Stoke's deployment potential, and also preserves operators' freedom to select Wi-Fi radio equipment according to their own priorities.
Wi-Fi eXchange Features
Stoke's Wi-Fi eXchange combines vital capabilities including secure, seamless authentication, high quality service access, operator visibility and traffic control, and interoperability with all major device types. The platform leverages standards including 3GPP Release 11, SaMoG1, which supports both 3G and 4G/LTE interworking, and the Wireless Broadband Alliance / Wi-Fi Alliance's Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Passpoint™ specification.
Stoke Wi-Fi eXchange allows operators to provide distinct, differentiated user experience benefits including:
- Seamless, clientless mobile authentication and authorization
- Secure and trusted communications from UE to mobile core
- Selective subscriber access to operator's hosted services
- Reports usage and location details on subscriber sessions
