Storage Strategies NOW Releases Findings of Study on Data Reduction: Deduplication and Compression

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwire - Feb 28, 2012) -

  • Research highlights challenges businesses face as they seek to deploy deduplication and compression technologies
  • Report includes results of a co-sponsored SNIA/SSG-NOW IT Professionals Data Reduction and Data Protection Survey
  • Report provides practical advice, use case scenarios and an extensive solutions directory to help customers make informed purchasing decisions

Storage Strategies NOW (SSG-NOW), a specialist storage analysis and research organization, today released the findings of a new report and survey on data reduction technologies. Titled, "Data Reduction: Realizing the Benefits of Deduplication and Compression," the report defines the market for data reduction appliances and software, outlines its explosive growth and details how businesses are adopting and deploying data reduction for reducing the amount of primary and secondary storage stored.

The report also includes the results of an IT Professionals Adoption Survey, co-sponsored by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), which presents information on how end-users have deployed data reduction technologies and what type of data they are deduplicating and compressing.

Key findings of the report and survey are:

  • Over 69% of respondents are using data reduction technologies to reduce the amount of data they store;
  • 39% have implemented deduplication and compression, 14% have implemented deduplication only and 23% are using data compression only; and,
  • Over 35% of the respondents are familiar with the SNIA Data Protection and Capacity Optimization Committee, which educates IT Professionals on data protection and efficient data storage technologies and provides technical whitepapers for best practices and implementation considerations.

"The IT Professionals Deduplication and Compression Adoption Survey sheds new light on how organizations are deploying data reduction to reduce the amount of data stored and save on capital expenditures for storage capacity," says Deni Connor, founding analyst for SSG-NOW. "Trying to meet backup windows and managing data growth is the biggest data protection challenge businesses face."

"With an ever increasing amount of data being collected, analyzed, and stored, protecting the data while being efficient with administration, with operations, and with energy have become fundamental as part of the overall solution selection and deployed configuration considerations," stated Wayne M. Adams, Chairman, SNIA Board of Directors. "With enterprises ramping up for big data initiatives and options to extend the traditional datacenter infrastructure with hybrid and public cloud services, data protection and capacity optimization requirements will factor into service level agreements while there will be expanded use of compression, virtualization and deduplication solutions to offset capital equipment budgets."

The new report outlines technology solutions from more than 17 hardware and software vendors and organizations with deduplication and compression initiatives. It also includes detailed product validation and pricing information, as well as best practices for selecting, deploying and managing deduplication.

Information for this report was obtained through a number of sources including vendor questionnaires and interviews, end-user interaction, available market data and a survey of IT professionals, conducted in the last half of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012.
