Storm Chasing Group Sets Tornado Intercept Record in 2008

ARLINGTON, TX--(Marketwire - June 19, 2008) - Tempest Tours, Inc., a company that conducts storm chasing expeditions in Tornado Alley each spring, announced today that it has set a tornado intercept record of 24 since the 2008 season began in early May. The previous high was 23 tornadoes, set in 2003 and repeated in 2004.

"We have seen an especially active severe weather pattern since the middle of May," said Tempest Tours president Martin Lisius. "It's always a big forecasting and logistical challenge, but if Mother Nature produces trackable, daytime tornadoes on the Plains, it's likely we'll be there."

The company's staff of veteran storm chasers has intercepted 90 tornadoes since 2003. "But it's not all about tornado counts," says Lisius. "Our mission is to introduce the science and romance of storm chasing to guests. We place emphasis on teaching them about the dynamics of severe weather in a safe and responsible environment. They leave with a greater appreciation and respect for storms."

The 2008 storm season wraps up for the company at the end of the month. Lisius expects a few more tornado intercepts during that period. "We can't guarantee our guests will actually witness a tornado," Lisius said. "But we can promise them the opportunity to live the life of a real storm chaser for a few days. That in itself is an adventure of a lifetime for many of them," he said.

Tempest Tours operates in May and June, the peak of tornado activity in the US. Expeditions depart from Dallas - Ft. Worth, Oklahoma City and Denver. Fees range from $1,995.00 to $2,895.00 per person for 6, 9 and 10 days of storm chasing. Tempest offers a classroom tour, a photo tour and a special tour for kids with autism spectrum disorder, in addition to the regular tours.
