Stratus Launches 'Mission-Critical Hyper-V' Across ftServer Line

Entry-Level Server Option Drives Costs Down, Availability up for SMB and Edge Virtualization

MAYNARD, MA--(Marketwire - October 6, 2010) -  Expanding the options for businesses seeking affordable uptime reliability for demanding virtual workloads, Stratus Technologies today announced support for Microsoft Hyper-V across its entire ftServer® line of fault-tolerant platforms.

Mission-critical Hyper-V is Stratus Technologies' latest advancement in a decade-long commitment to ensure that the Windows Server-based applications most essential to a business' success can benefit from the industry's best uptime.

For the first time, Stratus also now offers the Enterprise Edition of Windows Server 2008 R2 on its most affordable entry-level server, the ftServer 2600 system. This combination provides small and mid-size businesses (SMB) and distributed edge applications with a battle-tested virtualization platform, having the same service-enabled uptime as enterprise-class models at a much lower price.

"Customers can now experience Microsoft Hyper-V, its tools and features such Live Migration in the easy-to-use and familiar Microsoft User Interface with 99.999+ percent mission-critical availability running on Stratus ftServer systems," said Mike Neil, general manager, Windows Server & Virtualization at Microsoft. "ftServer and critical application support are synonymous and Stratus now includes mission-critical support for Microsoft Hyper-V on ftServer systems. Giving customers the option of choosing the ftServer platform with Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V adds an availability dimension that hardens the entire solution against downtime and data loss."

The ftServer line is proven technology that integrates seamlessly and transparently into a Windows IT infrastructure, delivering uptime wherever it is needed -- data center or edge, virtual or non-virtual workloads, cloud or local, host or client.

"Extending ftServer uptime assurance to Hyper-V virtualization will help Windows Server customers take advantage of the software's many benefits, such as price, widely available skill sets, and easy adoption and expanded use of virtualization for critical business workloads," said Roy Sanford, Stratus CMO. "For Stratus, Hyper-V continues to expand our addressable market for availability products, providing new alternatives with a range of capabilities and prices to small and mid-size customers."

Industry-standard ftServer systems have earned Microsoft's "fault tolerant" server certification in the Windows Server Catalog, a designation requiring specific hardware design criteria and testing. The ftServer system architecture prevents downtime from occurring, using a combination of lock-step processor technology, failsafe software and advanced service technology. The server is completely redundant, housed in a single rack-optimized 4U enclosure, and ready to work out of the box. On average, ftServer systems experience only seconds of unplanned downtime annually in continuous operation. Stratus Active Upgrade™ software minimizes planned downtime for software patching and upgrades.
