Strengthening Saskatchewan's Herb and Spice Industry

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 14, 2011) - Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced today an investment of more than $252,000 to help the Saskatchewan Herb and Spice Association (SHSA) with the development of traceability tools for growers and pickers.

"A superior traceability system not only helps us protect the quality of our food supply but it also gives Canada a competitive edge when trying to access new markets," said Minister Ritz. "This investment will help the Saskatchewan Herb and Spice Association provide growers with the tools they need to meet market requirements."

This investment will support the development of a series of traceability tools such as template documents and manuals, which will enable producers and pickers at the national level to meet the traceability requirements of buyers and markets for spice farmers.

"The funding allows us to help our industry reinforce traceability efforts throughout the supply chain and enhance their professional image," says Helga Halfinger, President SHSA (secretariat for the Canadian Herb, Spice and Natural Health Product Coalition). "The results of this project will make standardized traceability tools available for the industry as a whole."

Under the Canadian Industry Traceability Infrastructure component of the Canadian Integrated Food Safety Initiative, the Government of Canada supports national organizations in the development and implementation of traceability processes and systems.
