Strike at printing firm as talks break down

UCKFIELD, UNITED KINGDOM--(CCNMatthews - April 26, 2007) - Amicus members working at Pureprint, a printing company in Uckfield, East Sussex have voted in favour of industrial action next week after talks broke down over pay.

The union which represents almost the entire production workforce had 65% of ballot forms returned in favour of continuous strike action to begin on May 4th.

Amicus want the nationally agreed BPIF/Amicus National Pay award at 3.3%. Pureprint don't seem to want to settle this issue and expect the workers to accept a pay freeze.

Amicus Regional Official, Denis Spencer, who represents employees, said:

"Talks broke down after our offer was again rejected and the management refused to put forward a deal. The workforce feel as though they are being taken for granted. Amicus officials and union stewards want to resolve this but the company don't seem to want to.

"The employer has also recently sent a letter to all employees, at home, which was designed to intimate our members and set employees against each other. Their letter states that 'we are in a very strong position' and also warns against industrial action saying 'it will only weaken the company, job security and adversely affect future pay increases and not just those taking industrial action.' Our members feel that their contribution is significant to the high profit the company have enjoyed.

"Amicus have tried negotiating for over 4 months and our members have demonstrated magnificent patience. However they now don't believe their concerns are being taken seriously and to demonstrate the strength of feeling they have taken the decision to protest with industrial action."

The company, after numerous requests, has again refused to meet with Amicus to resolve this dispute and the planned industrial action will go ahead as from Friday 4th May.
