Strike in Peel

Transhelp joins Ontario Works and Public Works on the picket line

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 10, 2012) - Transhelp workers, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 966 joins their sisters and brothers from Ontario Works Human Services and Public Works on the picket line today at 6:01 PM.

"This is a very serious problem," said Mary Jo Falle, president of CUPE Local 966. "We now have almost 900 workers on strike in three units.

"Enough is enough! Why will Peel Council not direct their negotiators to give their unionized staff the same deal they have given their managers and non-union staff," Falle stressed.

The 500 Ontario Works Human Services employees have been on strike since May 3; Public Works members, 282 of them, have been on strike since June 4th. There are approximately 100 Transhelp workers now on strike.

CUPE Local 966 issues with the Region of Peel are similar with all three units - equal treatment with non-bargaining unit staff and management, and retention of benefits.

"I don't understand why the councilors have abrogated their responsibility to their constituents and the public," said Michel Revelin, vice president CUPE Local 966. "We know and have witnessed clients of Ontario Works Human Services being turned down for benefits and being locked out of the building. We have this on video, he continued. "Is this the kind of behavior our councillors accept from their management staff?"

There will now be at least 13 picket lines across the Region.
