Striking CUPE 1393 members 'un-cancel' University of Windsor 50th Anniversary Barbecue this Thursday in front of Kerr House

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 17, 2013) - Striking skilled trade and professional staff at the University of Windsor, members of Local 1393 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 1393) are hosting an 'un-cancelled' campus community barbecue this Thursday, September 19.

"One of the most disappointing things for us when the strike began was to learn that university administration had cancelled the campus community barbecue scheduled for this Thursday," said Dean Roy, President of CUPE 1393.

"That's why we felt it was important not to ignore our amazing campus community of students, faculty, support staff and the surrounding neighbourhood, so we've decided to 'un-cancel' the barbecue and host it with a little help from our friends," he added.

The festivities will take place this Thursday, between 12 noon and 1:30 p.m., in front of Kerr House, home of the Windsor University Faculty Association, located at 366 Sunset Avenue.

Guests can look forward to free hot dogs, chips and pop, while supplies last, along with the opportunity to get to know CUPE 1393 members and the work each of them does to make the University of Windsor a great learning environment.

A number of organizations, both off and on campus, have either sponsored, or are supporting the event, including CUPE National, CUPE Ontario, Windsor and District Labour Council, University of Windsor Students' Alliance (UWSA), Organization of Part-Time University Students (OPUS), Graduate Student Society and Windsor University Faculty Association.

CUPE 1393 represents 280 skilled trades and professional staff of the University of Windsor who provide a wide range of vital services, including plumbers and carpenters, nursing staff, lab technicians and information technology specialists, to name just a few.

"Local 1393 is proud to be a 'Gold Sponsor' of the University's 50th Anniversary celebrations, and the only thing that would make a celebration barbecue with students even better would be if university administration would agree to return to the bargaining table to settle this dispute," said Roy.
