Strong Growth for Carrier Router and Switch Sales in 1Q11

Cisco and Juniper Post Healthy Market Share Gains According to Synergy

RENO, NV--(Marketwire - May 16, 2011) - Synergy Research Group announces the publication of the 1Q11 Service Provider and Carrier Ethernet (CE) Switch Market Share report, which provides quarterly market shares for Core Routers, Edge Routers & Switches, Ethernet Services Edge Routers, Multi Services Edge Routers, and Carrier Ethernet Switches.

The first quarter of 2011 saw continued service provider investment in Edge and Core IP networks, driving up sales 9.4% to $2.6 Billion. Cisco, Juniper, and Alcatel-Lucent continue to be the cornerstone of Carrier IP network investments, providing the network infrastructure for Mobile Internet, Video, Cloud Services, and Data Center deployments.

Synergy finds it notable that Cisco's market share remains dominant and growing in the face of formidable competition and the ever-changing requirements of network infrastructure. Although there is ample opportunity for other vendors to participate in this market, Cisco still today holds the dominant #1 market share position with nearly 2.5 times greater market share than its closest #2 competitor and over 3 times the amount of market share than its more distant #3 competitor.

Currently, IP network investments is substantially greater in North America, where sales grew 16.1% in 1Q11, compared to APAC's 6.7% growth and EMEA's 3.1% growth.

"In North America, the biggest impacts on Carrier Network investment have been the Mobile phenomenon and video, both having become significant drivers for service provider Router-Switch sales. When Steve Jobs launched the iPhone, the explosive consumer demand took everyone by surprise; especially the Carriers who saw mobile Internet traffic quickly outpace their existing infrastructure," said Jeremy Duke, Founder & Principal Analyst, Synergy Research Group. "As this phenomenon continues to expand and as video develops, Carriers around the world will need to continue upgrading their networks in step with the growing demand of interactive and dynamic consumer-based network services."

Also the Synergy report notes, that taking into account other emerging trends such as Cloud Service deployments and Data Center build outs, Synergy is forecasting the Service Provider Router-Switch market to approach 20% growth in 2011.
